Social media has taken the online world by storm since the arrival of these platforms roughly 5 years ago, with Facebook leading the way in terms of social networking platforms. Whereas almost every person in the UK between the ages of 50 – 15 have a Facebook account, there are many others which are not as popular to the same demographic and others which are extremely niche, such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Digg, and various niche forums.

There is currently over 350 million active users on Facebook but just six months ago this was only 250 million which means there has been 40% increase in its number of users in under six months. The largest growing demographic is actually those between the ages of 45 and 60 years old who are starting to get to grips with the whole social media world.
Data from the world of Facebook claims that 50% of their users log onto their accounts every single day, which means 175million people atleast are logging into their accounts every 24 hours.
There are now 75 million user accounts registered with Twitter however only 15 million of these are users on a regular basis. But this is still enough produce an average of 1.3 million 'tweets' per hour every day, which in turn means that at this current rate Twitter processes nearly 10 billion tweets per year.
